‘On several days the enemy shelling was rather heavy and this made observation unpleasant when our trenches were the target aimed at. The greater part of our trench lies end on to the enemy batteries which make it a favourable mark for them. The first day crump after crump came over during the morning. Then the next day we were bombarded by trench mortars for a good part of the day. I was beginning to think it was not a healthy sector for intelligence officers but afterwards, except for a few occasions when we had made ourselves particularly objectionable, we were not treated to any special hate.’

Sibly’s experiences are borne out by war diaries in which recording officers note at least twice as many ‘quiet days’, on which units suffer no shelling of note, than days on which significant artillery activity took place.
